A lot of WordPress users face the same issue when they want to use Gutenberg to create a website: lack design options. I have just discovered a super cool plugin that you can use to address the issue: ZoloBlocks.
ZoloBlocks is a plugin aimed specifically at those who love to create WordPress websites with block editor (aka Gutenberg).
With the plugin, you no longer need to worry about not being able to apply a certain design style when designing a page with Gutenberg.
It brings in a set of blocks, more design options in the settings panel, ready-to-use templates, and so on.
Read on to learn more about the plugin if you really love building WordPress websites with Gutenberg.

So, What Can ZoloBlocks Really Do?
First thing first, if you think you can only use Gutenberg to create content, you are wrong. Some WordPress users are switching to Gutenberg to replace Elementor and the likes, especially since the release of Site Editor.
The problem with Gutenberg is that it doesn’t have advanced design options like Elementor (and other page builder plugins).
A simple instance. Gutenberg has no built-in visibility control option to disable a block on a certain device type. Whereas this option is super crucial to design a responsive page.
Another big issue with Gutenberg is related to availability of the design elements (blocks). While it has tens of built-in blocks, highly-used elements like icon and form are still unavailable. And this is where you need ZoloBlocks.
ZoloBlocks brings in the editing experience of a page builder to Gutenberg.
Before You Use ZoloBlocks
ZoloBlocks doesn’t require you to use a specific theme. You can use it whether on a classic theme or block theme, including the default WordPress themes like Twenty Twenty-Five and Twenty Twenty-Four.
I myself tested it on Twenty Twenty-Four, the default WordPress theme which falls into a block theme.
If you truly want to use ZoloBlocks to build your WordPress websites, I strongly recommend you to create a dedicated page template on Site Editor. In your template, you don’t need to add any element because you want to use ZoloBlocks’ blocks to populate the page with.
Or you can simply use the default Page No Title template on your page. With this template, your page will not contain the page title when you publish it.
To use this template, first, click Pages on the page settings panel and select the Swap template option.

On the appearing window, you can select the Page No Title template.

Now you can have some fun with ZoloBlocks with the default WordPress theme.
Or You Can Use Axvart
If you want to skip the route above, you can use Axvart. It is a block-based theme from BdThemes, the developer of ZoloBlocks. You can download the theme for free on the BdThemes dashboard.
With Axvart, you don’t need to select a page template every time you want to creat a page with Gutenberg. Its default page template has the page title disabled.
Also, you will have a better page building experience. The theme removes the white spaces at the edge of canvas area so you have more space for your design.

What Blocks Offered by ZoloBlocks?
Above, I said that the biggest downside of Gutenberg is that it doesn’t come with the most-used design elements like icon and form. Oftentimes, users are forced to install too many plugins to add these elements, which is obviously not a good practice.
ZoloBlocks comes with tons of useful blocks to eliminate the need of installing too many plugins on your website.
Some icon-contained blocks like Fancy List, Review, Star Rating and Social Links are available.
ZoloBlocks leverages Font Awesome to offer free icons to users. You can also upload your own icon in an SVG format. ZoloBlocks has a built-in feature to allow SVG upload on your WordPress system. You can access this feature on the settings screen of ZoloBlocks.
Here is the list of blocks offered by ZoloBlocks:

In total, there are 84 Gutenberg blocks offered by ZoloBlocks. You can organize them via the settings screen of ZoloBlocks.
If you think you don’t need a certain block, you can simply use the toggle to disable it. This will hide it from the block inserter in the Gutenberg editor.

If you take a look at the above tables closely, you will see that some blocks that ZoloBlocks offers have the same functionality as the built-in Gutenberg blocks.
For instance, the Advanced Button block has the same functionality as Gutenberg’s Buttons widget. However, the ZoloBlocks’ Advanced Button block, as mentioned in the opening section, offers more design options than Gutenberg’s Buttons widget.
In ZoloBlocks’ Advanced Button block, you have options to further style up the button border such as setting the width, setting the color and so on. The same setting options are not available in Gutenberg’s Button widget.

Also, you can add an icon instantly without dealing with CSS code.
Another example of ZoloBlocks’ block that has the similar functionality as Gutenberg’s built-in block is Advanced Image.
Unlike Gutenberg’s built-in Image block, the ZoloBlocks’ Advanced Image block offers more styling options. You can, for instance, add image masking, add overlay, set object fit, apply an effect and a lot more.

More about design features of ZoloBlocks will be covered in a dedicated section below.
Design Features
Before we go further covering the design features, I want to insist that each block has different styling options, depending on the elements it has.
For instance, if you are working with the Advanced Heading block, you won’t see options like the ones you see on the Advanced Image block like mask shape, object fit, and so on.
Conversely, you won’t see options like typography, text stroke, etc when working with the Advanced Image block.
Here are some key design features that ZoloBlocks offers:
Shortcuts ⤵️
- Flexbox Layout
- Advanced Responsive editing
- Display Condition
- Ability to Add Icon
- CSS Transform
- Advanced Gradient Builder
- Custom CSS
Flexbox Layout
One of the most crucial things you will get after installing ZoloBlocks is the ability to create a complex design. That’s because the plugin offers flexbox layout which allows you to flexibly arrange the layout of content/elements of a container.
A simple implementation of flexbox is that you can add multiple elements to a container and set them to be in a horizontal/inline position.

To allow you to get the most out of flexbox, ZoloBlocks offers a dedicated block, the Container block, which you can use to arrange the layout of your design. You can use this block to replace the Gutenberg’s built-in Row and Stack blocks in which the usage is a bit confusing because in most cases, you also need to create groups.
The Container block offers 12 different layout options you can choose from. Pretty similar to Elementor and other page builders. You can also make some settings to a Container block such as setting the width, height, padding and margin.

The best part of the Container block is that you can add new Containers within a Container (nested containers). This is super useful if you want to create an extremely complex layout where multiple design elements are placed close to each other.

Advanced Responsive Editing
So far, Gutenberg has no built-in feature designed to create a responsive page. It’s true that you can use CSS units like percent, em, vh to vw. But responsive editing is more than that.
One of the best practices in designing a responsive page is that you disable the elements that take large portion on the screen of mobile devices (smartphones).
Take a look at the following screenshots:

Those are the screenshots of the hero section of the Stripe homepage. The left one is the hero section on desktop while the right one is the hero section on mobile.
Can you spot the difference?
Correct.
The smartphone image is not displayed on the mobile device. Why? Because this image takes a large enough portion of the screen on mobile devices. Even without the image, the message conveyed on the hero section still looks pretty clear.
When designing a responsive page, clarity matters more than just a design. Thus, disabling unnecessary elements on mobile is crucial.
Apart from the ability to disable an element on the mobile device, another handy responsive feature offered by ZoloBlocks is the ability to use different setting values on each device.
For instance, when you are designing a Container block, you can use a different width for desktop, tablet and smartphone.

Of course, not only you can use different values on the Container block, but you can also use different setting values on any ZoloBlocks’ block.
Here are the responsive editing features offered by ZoloBlocks:
- Ability to disable design element (block) on certain devices
- Ability to use different setting values on different devices
- Responsive units (percent, em, rem, vh, vw)
Display Condition
Display condition is a feature that you can use to show or hide an element based on a certain condition or two.
Above, I have mentioned that ZoloBlocks allows you to show or hide an element by device type (desktop, tablet or smartphone). Display condition takes the dynamic visibility on your website to the next level.
You can use this feature to show or hide an element by conditions like user role, login status, web browser and post type (post or page). Also, there is an option to show or hide an element on a specific day within a week.

ZoloBlocks allows you to add multiple conditions. This feature is accessible via the settings panel on the Visibility Control settings block under the Extra tab.

This feature is quite useful since you don’t need to install an extra plugin to hide a block on your page. Block Visibility is a common plugin installed to do the same job.
Two examples where display condition feature is beneficial is when you are running a membership website and e-commerce website.
For a membership website, you can use the feature to show the content only when users are logged in (meaning they have a registered account). While for an e-commerce website, you can use the feature to create a promotional banner that shows only on a specified day(s).
Ability to Add Icon Elements
As I mentioned above, icon (and form) are two of the most-used elements in web design. And they are still not available in Gutenberg by default.
There is a useful plugin called The Icon Block to allow you to easily add an SVG icon to your Gutenberg-powered page. But if you use ZoloBlocks, you don’t need to install yet another plugin only to add an icon!
ZoloBlocks offers a block called Icon dedicated to adding an icon to your design. The block is integrated with Font Awesome to offer you thousands of icon options to choose from. If you prefer using your own icon, you can also do so.
ZoloBlocks allows you to use your own icon in an SVG format.

Before you can upload an SVG file, you need to make the setting first since WordPress doesn’t allow SVG upload by default. ZoloBlocks comes with a setting option to allow SVG upload on your WordPress site.

Apart from the Icon block, you can also add an icon on some of ZoloBlocks’ blocks. Including Advanced Button, Fancy List, Social Links, and Advanced Icon Box.
CSS Transform and Motion Effects
So far, Gutenberg has no built-in feature to add an animation effect. Not even a simple effect like hover effect.
When implemented properly, you can use an animation effect to wow your visitors and keep them to say longer.
ZoloBlocks comes with some animation effects you can apply to your design. The simplest animation form you can add to your design is hover effect. You can add a hover effect to any block.
Another animation effect you can apply is CSS transform.
CSS Transform
Transform is a CSS feature (property) that allows you to visually manipulate an element. You can think of some manipulation forms like rotate, scale, skew and so on.
Of course, you don’t need to deal with CSS code to apply a CSS transform. Instead, you can simply select a transform you like and ZoloBlocks will do the rest.
ZoloBlocks offers 5 transform types you can choose from:
- Translate
- Rotate
- Scale
- Skew
- Flip
You can access CSS transform on the Transform block under the Extra tab on the settings panel. You can add CSS transform to both the normal state and hover state.

Motion Effects
Apart from CSS transform and hover effect, ZoloBlocks also allows you to add more advanced animations like floating effect, parallax effect, sticky effect to entrance animation.
Whichever the effect you want to use, you can control its animation behavior. If you want to add an entrance animation, for instance, you can set things like pace and animation type.

Here are the motion effects you can apply to your design:
- Entrance animation
- Floating effect
- Parallax effect
- Sticky effect

Other Animation Effects
Two other animation effects that you can apply to your design are cursor effect and interaction.
Cursor effect is the form of animation where a pointer is applied to anywhere your cursor is directed within a certain area.

By default, you will see an orange dot as the pointer, but you can replace it with a text, icon or image.
Interaction, meanwhile, is the form of animation where the animation effect takes place only when a visitor takes a certain action.
For instance, the page will scroll up when a visitor clicks on a button. Or the animation effect will take place when the cursor is hovered over a certain block.

You can add multiple interactions if you want to.
Both cursor effect and interaction can be applied to any ZoloBlocks’ block.
Advanced Gradient Builder
Another notable feature offered by ZoloBlocks that you can use to make your design stand out is the ability to add an advanced gradient.
When setting a gradient background on a certain block, you can add multiple stops, not limited to two color stops.
The default gradient builder of Gutenberg also supports multiple stops, but in ZoloBlocks you can use a custom gradient CSS created by online gradient generators like CSS Pro, Codioful and Coolors.

Custom CSS
Building a WordPress website with ZoloBlocks is pretty similar to building a website with a page builder plugin where you can easily drag an element to the canvas area and make the settings via the settings panel.
You don’t need to deal with CSS code.
Nevertheless, if you are a seasoned web designer who wants to apply a certain style that ZoloBlocks can’t accommodate, you can achieve it via custom CSS.
In ZoloBlocks, you can apply custom CSS to a specific block without affecting other blocks on your design. You can apply a local style using {{ZOLO}}
prefix.
When you type the above prefix before the selector, the style will only be applied to the current block.
ZoloBlocks itself shows all the predefined selectors (classes) which you can use to add the custom style to. Clicking on these selectors will bring them to the CSS editor so you only need to set the properties and values.

General Features
- Premade Patterns and Templates
- Form Builder
- Popup Builder
- Advanced Menu Builder
- Chart Builder
- Loop Builder
- Dynamic Content
- AI Assistant
- Coming Soon and Maintenance Mode
Premade Block Patterns and Templates
One of the visible changes you will see on your WordPress website after you install and activate the ZoloBlocks plugin is that you will see a Template Library button on the toolbar area (above the content/canvas area).
When you click the button, a template library window will show up and you will see tons of premade block patterns and page templates built with ZoloBlocks.

There are over 300 premade block patterns that you can use to create a page more quickly, ranging from call to action, pricing table, testimonial and so on.
You can use the filtering feature to find a template/pattern you need. ZoloBlocks also offers a bookmark feature to allow you to find a template/pattern you love even quicker.
To import a pattern/template, you can simply click the Import button on the pattern/template you want to import. You can also preview the pattern/template first.

For live demos of the ready-made block patterns and page templates, you can visit this page on the official site of ZoloBlocks.
Form Builder
ZoloBlocks can be a great plugin to create a landing page with Gutenberg. It comes with a form builder which you can use to collect leads or whatever your purpose with a form.
The form builder feature of ZoloBlocks is represented by the Form block. With this block, you no longer need to install a dedicated form builder plugin like Contact Form 7 or WPForms when you need to create a form.
What form fields are available?
The Form block of ZoloBlocks supports the following form fields:
- Checkbox
- Country
- Date time
- Number
- Phone
- Radio
- Select
- Text
- Message (text area)

By default, form submissions will be sent to the specified email address, but you can also set them to be sent to the form submission manager in case you prefer to manage the form submissions on your WordPress dashboard.

Here is the form submission manager offered by ZoloBlocks.

The form messages (success message, fail message and validation message) are customizable. To protect your form from spammers, you can also protect it with Google reCAPTCHA.
Email Opt-in Form
Apart from the Form block which you can use to create a more generic form, ZoloBlocks also comes with a Newsletter block which you can use to collect email addresses and connect it with an email marketing platform.

Unfortunately, this block only supports Mailchimp. No other email marketing platforms are supported.
Popup Builder
ZoloBlocks also has a feature to create a popup. You can use this feature to create either a notification bar or a simple popup box that shows up when a page is loaded.
The design of the popup is fully customizable and you can add any element to your popup. When creating a popup, you will find a container dedicated to hosting the popup content. The container also plays a role as the wrapper where you can enable or disable the overlay/wrapper.
ZoloBlocks allows you to set the position of the popup. You can also set on which devices the popup to show up.

The popup builder of ZoloBlocks is great to create a simple popup that visually looks great. Unfortunately, it still has some limitations.
There is no option to set the popup behavior (trigger). You can only show the popup on page load. There are no options to show the popup on click or page scroll yet.
Advanced Menu Builder
If you plan to use ZoloBlocks with a block theme, then you can create a custom header using Site Editor and use the advanced menu builder that ZoloBlocks offers. This feature is represented by the three blocks:
- Navigation
- Mega Menu
- Submenu

As you can see on the above screenshot, ZoloBlocks comes with a Mega Menu block.
You know what it means? Correct.
You can create a mega menu using Site Editor thanks to the plugin. You can add any content to your mega menu. If you run e-commerce, you can showcase your popular product.
If you run a blog, you can showcase the featured posts on your blog.
Mega Menu
I want to go a bit deeper about Mega Menu.
Mega menu is the type of menu that displays navigational menu on your website in an advanced way. The biggest difference between a mega menu and a traditional menu is that in a mega menu, you can can have mulitple columns to accomodate more menu items.
Take a look at the following screencast.

Of course, you can create a better mega menu than the one above.
When creating a mega menu using the Mega Menu block, you can add any block you want. Be it the native Gutenberg blocks or ZoloBlocks blocks.
To arrange the mega menu layout itself, you can use the Container block of ZoloBlocks or the native Column block. The mega menu layout is fully customizable.
Chart Builder
ZoloBocks has a feature that you can use to display data in an interactive visual chart. The feature is represented by the Charts block.
You can use the block to turn boring numbers into an appealing visual format. There are five chart types you can choose from: bar, area, line, pie and donut.

About the data, you can manually input it or import it from a CSV file. Soon, you can also import the data from Google Sheets.
Loop Builder
Not only that you can use ZoloBlocks to create a static website like a portfolio website, but you can also use it to create a dynamic website.
When I say a “dynamic website”, it doesn’t always mean a blog and the similar websites. Think of a website type like a directory website or even a listing website. You can create these types of websites using ZoloBlocks thanks to its Loop Builder.
But before you use its Loop Builder, make sure that you have checked the following blocks first:
- Post Grid
- Post Carousel
- Post List
- Post Tab
You can use the above blocks to display blog posts on your website in a wide range of styles. If you want to display your blog posts in a grid style, for instance, you can use the Post Grid block.
If you want to display your blog posts in a carousel style, then you can use the Post Carousel block. The Post Tab block, meanwhile, is useful to display blog posts in a filterable tabbed style.

Apart from blog posts, you can also use the above blocks to display pages and custom post types.
So, when do you need to use Loop Builder?
Basically, the use of Loop Builder is a bit similar to the above blocks. In Loop Builder, however, you have more controls over the design and elements of the post feed.
You can, for instance, add a custom dynamic element such as user nickname, user bio and so on.
You can basically add any content to a loop item. Be it static or dynamic.
You can even add custom content pulled from custom fields data. I tested the feature using a custom field created with ACF.

To add dynamic content, you can use both the Advanced Paragraph, Star Rating, Advanced Heading and other blocks that have text elements.
Dynamic Content
As I have just above said that you can add dynamic content to a loop item.
You can actually add dynamic content anywhere on your design. To add dynamic content, you can simply click the database icon on the floating editing bar of Gutenberg.

You will see the above icon on the Advanced Heading, Advanced Paragraph, Star Rating, Review, List and other blocks that have text elements.
When you click the icon, you will see a list of dynamic content types you can add to your design.
Here is the list of the dynamic content types supported by ZoloBlocks:
- Post title
- Post ID
- Post slug
- Post date
- Post time
- Post author
- Post comment
- Post excerpt
- Post tag
- Post category
- Post status
- Post type
- Post meta (including custom meta key/custom field)
- Alt text of featured image
- Caption of featured image
- Description of featured image
- Title of featured image
- Site title
- Site tagline
- Site date
- Site time
- Archive title
- Archive description
- Term id
- Term title
- Term description
- Term slug
- Term count
- Username
- User email
- User website
- User display name
- User nickname
- User first name
- User last name
- User bio
- Search query
- Search search results
The above dynamic content is super useful when you want to create a custom template in Site Editor.
AI Assistant
If you love using generative AI to generate content for your website, then you will love this feature.
The generative AI feature offered by ZoloBlocks allows you to generate text content to your design. You can use this feature on Advanced Heading and Advanced Paragraph blocks. On these blocks, you will see an extra icon — the generative AI icon on the setting bar of Gutenberg.

Clicking the above icon will open a new window where you can generate text content.

How about the language?
ZoloBlocks AI supports nearly all languages. From English, Arabic, French and so on. You can also set the tone of the text.
Before you can use this feature, you need to generate a license key from the BdThemes dashboard. You can do so from the AI Licenses menu.

Once the license key is generated, you can use it on the website you are creating. Simply go to the settings screen of ZoloBlocks and add the license on the Zolo AI settings block.

The generative AI feature offered by ZoloBlocks is quite useful to generate temporary texts rather than using the lorem ipsum text. If you satisfy with the generated text, you can even use it.
Coming Soon and Maintenance Mode
It’s a common practice to show a “coming soon” message to those visiting your website while your website is not ready to release yet.
Creating the page to show the message itself is extremely easy as WordPress allows you to use a static page to be shown on the front page.
ZoloBlocks comes with a feature to make the creation of a coming soon page even easier. Not just a coming soon page, you can also easily enable the maintenance mode.
You can access this feature on the settings screen. Simply go to ZoloBlocks -> Settings on your WordPress dashboard and click the Site Visibility tab.

What makes this feature cool is that when you create a new page, ZoloBlocks will display a wrapper containing the block editor. ZoloBlocks also offers some ready-to-use coming soon and maintenance mode page templates to ease your job.

ZoloBlocks Free vs Pro
ZoloBlocks is released as a freemium plugin. Meaning that there are two versions of the plugin: free and pro.
The free version of ZoloBlocks is available on WordPress.org while the pro version is available to purchase on BdThemes website.
Of course, the pro version offers more features than the free version. Advanced features like loop builder, motion effects, display condition and dynamic content are only available in the pro version of the plugin.
Earlier in this section, I have shown you the list of the blocks offered by ZoloBlocks. I have created two tables to make it easy for you to compare the blocks available in each version.
In the table below, I will show you the features comparison between ZoloBlocks Free vs Pro.

ZoloBlocks Pros and Cons
If you love to build a website using Gutenberg, then ZoloBlocks is a plugin you should give a try.
ZoloBlocks is a great plugin for two main reasons. First, it comes with tons of useful blocks to eliminate the need of installing too many plugins on your website. As you know, installing too many plugins contributes to slowing down your site. Plus, managing plugins is quite challenging sometimes.
Second, you can unleash your creativity in web design thanks to its extensive design options.
You don’t need to use a certain theme to use ZoloBlocks. You can even pair it with the default WordPress theme.
But still, as a human-made product, ZoloBlocks is not perfect. Some downsides exist in some areas.
One of the most noticeable ones is that it only supports Mailchimp for its email marketing platform integration. Whereas not everyone uses Mailchimp due to its high cost.
Also, its popup builder still lacking of features. You can’t set the popup behavior as well as display condition.
ZoloBlocks Pros:
- Tons of useful blocks to eliminate the need of installing too many WordPress plugins
- Extensive design options
- Can be used to create a complex dynamic website thanks to its extensive dynamic content. Including integration support with ACF
- Useful pre-made templates
- Ability to organize blocks
- Doesn’t require subscription-based payment for the pro version
- Works nicely with any theme
- Useful SVG upload and coming soon/maintenance mode
ZoloBlocks Cons:
- Popup builder needs many improvements
- Only supports Mailchimp for email marketing platform
- No WooCommerce blocks
Summary – Is ZoloBlocks a Good Plugin?
Many users are switching to Gutenberg to create their WordPress website. The biggest problem is that it’s super challenging to unleash your creativity because the default design options available in Gutenberg are limited.
Plus, you need to install extra plugins every time you want to add a form or an icon.
The majority of WordPress users keep considering Gutenberg as a content editing tool instead of a page building tool.
But after you try ZoloBlocks, I am pretty sure you will have a different perspective about Gutenberg. Instead of using it merely to create content, you may start to think of using it as a page builder.
You will have a bunch of design options to unleash your creativity.
There are tons of blocks offered by ZoloBlocks. You can achieve many things with only a single plugin. ZoloBlocks is definitely a worth-trying plugin if you love building a website using Gutenberg.
